“Elijah in the Wilderness” Icon
“Elijah in the Wilderness” icon from the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. It was created by the anonymous icon
painter of the Pskov school in the 13th-14th century. The antique icon depicts the
Old Testament figure, Elijah the Prophet, against a rocky landscape, surrounded
by the scenes from his life and the image of the Deesis. It is the oldest known
Russian hagiographic icon and the most significant one of the Pskov school.
