Icon of the Savior Made Without Hands
The Savior Made Without
Hands, or the Holy Mandylion, is one of the oldest Jesus Christ icons with an
interesting history. According to the legend, it was not painted by a human hand
but was miraculously imprinted on a piece of cloth when the Lord wiped His face with the towel. The earliest surviving
image of this type is the 12-century icon of the Savior Made Without Hands, which
is now kept in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
