The Burning Bush Icon
The Burning Bush icon from
the collection of the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, MD. It was created by the anonymous Russian icon painter in
the late 16th century. The Burning Bush icon depicts the Theotokos in the
center of an eight-pointed star formed by two diamonds: a green diamond
representing the bush and a red diamond representing fire. This composition is based
on the miracle that happened to Moses on Mount Horeb when the prophet
witnessed a bush burning with fire, yet unconsumed.
