Icon of Our Lady of Vladimir
Our Lady of Vladimir is
the oldest and most venerated icon in Russia. This important icon, which
was painted in the 12th century, was brought to Russia as a gift to Yury
Dolgorukiy from the Greek Patriarch of Constantinople Luke Chrysoberges. Our Lady of Vladimir belongs to the Eleusa type of the Mother of God icons
that depict the Virgin Mary with Christ Child nestling against His mother’s
cheek. The icon is in the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery.
