Icon of Saint Macarius of Unzha
Icon of Saint Macarius of Unzha, also known as Venerable Macarius of the Yellow Water Lake
and the Unzha. It was created in the mid-19th century in Central Russia. Saint
Macarius (1349–1444) is considered to be the founder of several monasteries in
the Upper and Middle Volga regions of Russia. He is depicted in the center of
the composition, next to the monastery on the Volga River. The icon also
contains 12 hagiographical border scenes showing the main events of the saint’s life.
