Russian Icon “Maximus the Confessor and His Miracles”

Early 17th-century icon “Maximus the Confessor and His Miracles,” painted by the master of the Stroganov school, the most striking phenomenon in Russian icon painting of the 16th-17th centuries. As the name suggests, the icon depicts the Christian monk Maximus the Confessor who was a theologian and scholar, known for his irreconcilable struggle against heresies. Maximus was born circa 580 in Constantinople and died in 662 in Tsageri, present-day Georgia.
