Antique Icon of Saint Nicholas of Myra

Antique icon of Saint Nicholas of Myra from Saint Catherine’s Monastery on Mount Sinai in Egypt. It was painted in the first half of the 13th century. Saint Nicholas of Myra, or Nicholas the Wonderworker, is one of the most beloved saints all over the Christian world. He is the patron saint of children, students, unmarried people, sailors, merchants, and brewers. Little is known about the life of the historical Nicholas of Myra, but it is believed that he was the one whose habit of secret gift-giving gave rise to the well-known model of Santa Claus.
