19th-century Russian icon of the Mother of God “Assistant in Childbirth,” also known as the Mother of God “Succor in Travail.” It depicts the Theotokos with her head uncovered, her hair loose, and her hands on her chest right above the image of the Divine Infant blessing with His hand. As the name suggests, this type of the Mother of God icons is believed to help women in successful childbirth and to give health to the newborns.
