Icon of Christ Emmanuel by Simon Ushakov

Icon of Christ Emmanuel (1697) by Simon Ushakov, one of the greatest Russian icon painters of all time. As the name suggests, the icon depicts Christ Emmanuel who is represented as a boy, bust-length, looking directly at the viewer. Emmanuel is the name given to Jesus Christ by people, which means “God with us.” This iconographic type of the Savior is based on several biblical texts and is closely related to Isaiah’s prophecy of the birth of the Messiah.
