Russian Icon of Saint Mary of Egypt

17th-century Russian icon of Saint Mary of Egypt, with the scenes from her life. Saint Mary was a desert ascetic who repented of an extremely dissolute life. She lived as a hermit in the wilderness east of the Jordan River for 47 years, fasting and praying in complete solitude. Saint Mary of Egypt is considered a patron saint of penitents and is highly venerated in the Orthodox Church. Her feast day is celebrated on April 1 (April 14) and on the fifth Sunday in Great Lent.
