Icon of Saint Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna. Polycarp was a disciple of the Apostle John. He died a martyr in Smyrna (Izmir), bound and burned at the stake and then pierced with a spear, as the fire could not consume his body. Polycarp is regarded as Church Father and venerated as a saint in both Orthodox and Catholic Churches. Along with Ignatius of Antioch and Clement of Rome, he is also regarded as one of the chief Apostolic Fathers.
