13th-century Novgorod icon of Saint John Climacus, also known as John of the Ladder, from the collection of the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. Saint John Climacus was a Christian monk at the monastery on Mount Sinai, who lived in the 6th-7th centuries. He is the author of the famous ascetical treatise “Ladder of Divine Ascent,” which describes how to raise the body and soul to God through the acquisition of ascetic virtues. Saint John’s feast day is celebrated in Russia today, April 12.
